Free Music, Audio Books and E-Books Available for Check-Out

Did you know that you can use your phone or computer or e-book readers to download and read or listen to books from your library’s virtual branch? Overdrive has thousands of audio and e-books for you to check out for any period from 7 to 21 days. This is also available through libraries all across the country, so if your main residence is in another state, you can check out materials through a home library or state library consortium.

Wanting to check if your device is compatible? See http://overdrive.com/resources/drc/. I have a Nook, which is compatible, but some of my friends have a Kindle, which is not compatible. Overdrive is compatible with iPads and iPods.

I will refer to the State Library of Kansas program throughout the rest of this blog. The URL for Overdrive sponsored by the State Library of Kansas is http://kansas.lib.overdrive.com/.

First of all, to use this program, patrons need to have the Kansas Library Card.  If you already own a library card from Hays Public Library, that will work, also. If you do not have a Kansas Library Card, go here to register for a temporary library card – http://www.kslc.org/temporaryAccount.jsp. You will have 30 days to have your Kansas residency verified at your local library.

The following items are the different types of software that you will need to download for the format needed for your device before you can use Overdrive:

When you have the temporary card or are using your existing Kansas Library Card or HPL card, an account needs to be set up on the Overdrive page. Once you are signed in, you are ready to download any title that is shown on the “library shelves”.  It is much like checking out books from a library, except that you can determine how long you want to have the book or audiofiles available on your device. The items can be checked out for 7 to 21 days. Once the checkout period has expired, you will not be able to access the item unless you renew it before the return date.

There are help pages available from the Overdrive Kansas website that can take you through the process of downloading and transferring audio and book files to your devices – http://kansas.lib.overdrive.com/593E324A-F056-408E-9DBE-2A2E22D5D137/10/378/en/Help.htm.\

I have a Nook, so this requires that I have Adobe Digital Editions on my home computer. Once I have checked out the book and it is downloaded into ADE, I can read it on my computer, or I can transfer the book to my Nook. I found this excellent and fun tutorial that explains the process of using Overdrive in this manner.
